Action movies are a favorite because they're packed with combat, adventure, thrill & super awesome heroism. Save this list for 10 action movies that are awesome for many reasons.

Here's our countdown to 10 popular action movies you should watch if you haven't already. If you have, watch them again. They're that good!

1. Gladiator (2000)

An unbeatable match to the all-time blockbusters of action movies, Russel Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix stole the show. Two Hollywood heavyweights engaged in the action-packed combat grounds of ancient Rome, this movie features the ongoing psychological warfare between soldier & ruler. Straight out of the vaults of historical storytelling this movie is a classic. The movie director is Ridley Scott, known for sci-fi movies too.

2. First Blood (1982)

Starring Sylvester Stallone as an army veteran trying to survive the harsh realities of the world, John Rambo went on to become one of the greatest action heroes of all time. Many would argue that the sequels went on to become increasingly cartoonish, but nothing can take away the thrilling impact of First Blood. Directed by Ted Kotcheff, the movie is based on the novel of the same name by David Morrell. A thrilling war against injustice and discrimination, Rambo's unapologetic warfare will forever reign.

3. Braveheart (1995)

The portrayal of a late 13th-century Scottish warrior has never been more engaging to watch than Mel Gibson as William Wallace. The film depicts Wallace leading his fellow Scots to the First War of Scottish Independence against King Edward the 1st of England. Simply amazing, the movie went on to get nominated for ten academy awards and won five at the 68th Academy awards. The movie was directed and co-produced by Mel Gibson himself.

4. Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)

Arnold Schwarzenegger in all his glory as the Terminator takes over control, an irresistible blockbuster experience for movie lovers. To protect and serve, this movie is the embodiment of what sets humanity apart even lightyears into the future. When the Terminator says "I'll be back!" you can already foresee a movie franchise that lasted three decades and counting. In many cases, the sequel isn't always as good as the first, but this is hands down the best science fiction action film of the franchise. The movie was directed by none other than James Cameron, who also co-wrote the script with William Wisher Jr.

5. 300 (2006)

Based on the 1998 comics by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley, 300 is a fictionalized movie that narrates the Battle of Thermopylae during the ancient Greco-Persian Wars. Gerard Butler is King Leonidas who fiercely battles the Persian God-King Xerxes played by Rodrigo Santoro. A movie directed by Zack Snyder, the thrilling action combat is uniquely paired with stellar visual effects. Zack Snyder later goes on to direct amazing superhero movies like Man of Steel, Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice & the much anticipated Zack Snyder's Justice League to name a few.

6. The Dark Knight Trilogy

One of the greatest movie trilogies of all time, Christopher Nolan is the director of the best Batman movies of all time. Starring Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne, each of the three movies features famed villains from the DC Universe. Blessed beyond compare, the splendid action sequences, street-races & formidable character depictions play a vital role in each of Nolan's cinematic experiences. Viewers are left with so many questions at the end of each movie, satisfied that Nolan's creative excellence had just run them through an unforgettable movie bonanza. With the last of the movies, Dark Knight Rises (2012), Bale hung up the cape and made way for the next Batman.

7. Inglorious Basterds (2009)

The star cast of Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, Christoph Waltz, Michael Fassbender, Melanie Laurent & Eli Roth feature wartime action sequences that are nerve-racking. Set during World War II Nazi-occupied France, a troop of Jewish soldiers set out to exact vengeance on German oppression. Brewing with blood-boiling plot twists & horrendous acts of war, this movie is a war-time blockbuster for the ages. The movie director is Quentin Tarantino.

8. Avengers Endgame (2019)

I don't mean to exclude every insane action movie of the 20th century but Avengers Endgame is a wonderful cinematic experience. Who doesn't want to watch superheroes & aliens go to war over the beautiful planet Earth. For the very fact that this star-packed Marvel movie franchise has some of the best actors on screen, the Endgame is a conclusion that leaves audiences with bitter-sweet memories. If you haven't watched Avengers, lockdown is the perfect time to spoil yourselves.

The Russo brothers directed this movie and have not failed to impress global audiences. They also directed the previous movie in this franchise Avengers: Infinity War (2018) & the Captain America movies for Marvel.

9. Independence Day (1996)

The will to survive against an alien invasion and Will Smith pair well together. One of the biggest stars of Hollywood, this movie from 1996 is exactly the kind of performance that the actor has amazed the world with. Directed by Roland Emmerich, the movie is an ode to humanity's will to survive against all odds. When superior alien technology comes to invade our homes, Will Smith is in charge of safeguarding humankind. I guess that's enough to set up the action thriller that ensues.

10. The French Connection (1971)

I'm gonna end the list with 10 movies for now, mostly because I've decided to watch at least some of these movies again. Based on Robin Moore's non-fiction book by the same name, The French Connection is a movie that narrates the story of two American detectives Popeye & Cloudy. In a war against drugs, Gene Hackman stars as Popeye & Roy Scheider stars as Cloudy, defending their badge with honor & grit. The movie was directed by William Friedkin and features a stunning action-thriller that will never fade out of the spotlight. Watch the New York detectives fight crime in a culturally, historically & cinematically accurate screenplay.

In for a bonus movie?

Another movie suggestion is Warrior (2011), starring Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton & Nick Nolte, which I'm sure would top this list if it wasn't one of my favorite movies ever.

I hope my list was long enough, but it was always about sharing some valuable ideas on how to make lockdown more enjoyable. As the Covid19 pandemic tries to devour the human race, we're going to come out victorious by embracing our shared humanity!

Stay safe, be kind & enjoy the action movies on this list. As Buzz Lightyear would say, "To infinity & beyond..."
